Carpet cleaning and shampooing methods

Different Methods, Different Results

Did you know there are several methods to clean carpet? Different carpet cleaning methods produce different results. Here is a look at the four most common ways to get carpet clean.

Call us today to find out precisely why Precise Carpet Cleaning is the best.

Steam cleaning.

This is the most common type of carpet cleaning, also referred to as the hot water extraction. Steam cleaning utilizes hot water at high pressure to penetrate deep into carpet fibers to break down the dirt and debris. Dirty water is then extracted with a powerful vacuum. Steam cleaning uses little to no detergent, so this process is good for those with sensitivities to shampoo or other cleaning compounds. Steam also helps to kill any mold and mildew spores lurking around the carpet’s backing and underlying padding. If it takes an hour to steam clean your carpet, plan on letting it dry for at least twice that amount of time. Steam cleaning is good for your carpets and helps them last longer.

Carpet shampooing.

Shampooing your carpet uses detergents or cleansers placed directly on the carpet. A carpet groomer or rotary brush is then used on the carpet’s surface to loosen soil. The shampoo and dirt are then removed by wet-vacuuming. Carpet shampooing is good for some stubborn dirt and stains, and this is the most popular DIY way to clean carpets. Rental carpet machines are readily available at big box stores or local grocery chains. There is not really a rinsing option for this method, so any leftover residue can quickly attract dirt again. If you are sensitive to chemicals and odors, you might want to avoid carpet shampooing.

Dry cleaning.

Cleaning with this method is achieved with chemical cleaners and very minimal moisture. Dry cleaning begins with thorough vacuuming to remove surface dirt. A dry cleaning solution is then applied to the carpet area and allowed to sit for a few minutes. A specially designed cylindrical counter-rotating brush and pad is then used to absorb the cleaning solution and soil. Carpets are usually safe to walk on within a couple of hours. Dry carpet cleaning is a relatively new technology, and may not provide the deep cleaning your carpets need. Dry cleaning is good for refreshing your carpet between deep cleans.

Encapsulation.

This process involves applying a liquid or foam detergent to the carpet that crystalizes into a powder as it dries. During the drying process, dirt and debris are lifted from carpet fibers and encapsulated into the powder. The powder is them vacuumed up. This cleaning method is quick and environmentally friendly. It is not highly effective on heavy-duty stains or odors deep within a carpet.

Bonnet cleaning.

If you are just looking for a quick touch up carpet cleaning, this is the method for you. It cleans your carpet by using a machine with a spinning pad that has been immersed with cleaning solution to absorb dirt. Bonnet cleaning is used most often in commercial settings where appearance is more important than deep cleaning, and where drying time must be kept to a minimum. Lack of deep cleaning, however, means that trapped dirt will surface and show up on your carpets much sooner.
