Carpets soil slowly over time and it can be hard to see just how dirty they are really getting. When we clean for our customers we want to show a clean dirty line to them as we clean. Sometimes it isn’t very noticeable, but sometimes we are all shocked by the actual amount of soil in the carpet. Carpet that has had a carpet protector applied will almost always clean up better than a carpet that hasn’t had protector applied. This is a picture of a carpet we cleaned that didn’t look that dirty till we started to clean it. We have already applied our pre-treat which has started to loosen the soil and we are in the rinsing phase of the cleaning. The tool you see is rinsing the carpet will very high temperature water along with a rinsing agent, at the same time we are extracting all the dirty water through our tool to a waste tank in our van. This process helps to control humidity in the home while we are cleaning and is most effective at removing the allergens from the carpet. The high temperature solution will clean better and allow the carpet to dry quicker. We always want our customers to watch us do the cleaning so we can point out how soiled the different areas are and to be able to make recommendations as to the use of carpet protector and frequency of cleaning in the future.

I am always asked “how often should I clean my carpets?” The answer depends on many different circumstances, but for most people every 6 to 12 months will be enough. If you have children and pets you would need to clean more often than if you don’t. The type and quality of carpet makes a big difference too. It is recommended to have a carpet protector applied to most carpets after cleaning to help the carpet stay clean longer and to keep it in better shape for a longer time. This is a picture of a carpet that has been cleaned and protected by our company for over 14 years. We have steam cleaned it every 6 to 8 months and applied carpet protector to it every time. The overall look of the carpet is close to new. Some areas will get more soiled than others which is why it is important to have your carpet cleaned before the soiling gets too bad in the high traffic areas. We do run into carpets that have went many years without being professionally cleaned and some of the traffic areas will show wear patterns that effect the appearance of the carpet. Every carpet we clean will come clean but some will have shadows in the traffic areas from wear if the soil stays in the carpet too long. To sum it up, be sure to have your carpets cleaned as soon as you see soil build up in the walk ways. If you wait too long the carpet could end up with wear patterns that can’t be resolved by cleaning.

Carpet in a commercial setting can get heavily soiled over time. Even areas far from the entrance will have large amounts of soil and discoloration. We do offer commercial carpet cleaning in the St. Louis area. Most commercial carpet has bright colors that will dull over time without proper cleaning. If cleaned on a regular basis the carpet and color will last longer and have a much better appearance. We find that to keep cost down a lot of businesses use a in house cleaning process, in some cases it works well in between professional carpet cleanings, but in some cases it only makes the carpet look worse. This carpet didn’t look that soiled till we started cleaning only to find that the colors were much brighter than expected. Professional carpet cleaning not only helps the carpet last longer but it looks much cleaner too. Cleaning carpet in a business can also help with the indoor air quality which benefits all of us.

Our main business is Carpet Cleaning, but we also clean upholstery, tile, and air ducts. Often times we are cleaning something other than carpet for a customer when they mention they don’t think that there carpet is that dirty. We wanted to show our customers that sometimes a carpet will soil evenly over time and it may not be easily noticeable how soiled it really is. One way to see how soiled the carpet is, would be to move your sofa or some other piece of furniture to see what the carpet is supposed to look like. Most homes with have some wear and color loss in the visible carpet that isn’t noticeable until it is being cleaned or when the furniture is moved around. This carpet didn’t look too dirty at first, until we started to clean and noticed the color was much lighter than expected. This is common and we are always pleasantly surprised to see such a difference for our customers.

Over the years tile and grout can get extremely dirty. We even see a lot of grout that has never been sealed properly. This can present a big problem when trying to maintain the floor. We can help with this though. We do clean tile and grout and when we are done with the cleaning we also include sealing the grout which will help keep it clean in the future. We are always amazed at the amount of soil that we remove while cleaning tile so we decided to post a picture to show how we clean and the difference it can make. Normally grout absorbs the majority of the soil but sometimes even the tile gets discolored. When this happens it is normally too late for the home owner to be able to effectively clean either the tile or grout, that’s where we come in. We thoroughly clean it with high pressure water to flush all the soil and discoloration out. Then when we are done with the cleaning we seal the grout to ensure that it is easier to maintain for the home owner in the future.

This was a carpet sample that we freshly cleaned and protected with our carpet protector. I’m always asked by our St. Louis area customers how well carpet protector works. So we did a demonstration to show. This is a polyester carpet with carpet protector applied to show how well the it can cause spills to bead up on top instead of absorbing in to the carpet. This was after the spill had sat on the carpet for 24 hours. We do recommend carpet protector to be applied after cleaning carpet and upholstery. Not only does it help keep the spot from getting into the actual carpet but it does the same with soil. By protecting the carpet or upholstery when cleaning it should stay clean much longer and when you do clean it again it will clean up much better. Carpet that has been properly cleaned and protected can stay in good condition sometimes twice as long or more than carpet that hasn’t been properly maintained. I hope this allows you to see that carpet protector really works.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Childhood Asthma Study Published in The New England Journal of Medicine Concludes: No Difference in Allergen Levels in Carpeted vs. Uncarpeted HomesDalton, Georgia, April 15, 2011 -A major study of inner city children with asthma concludes that positive environmental interventions in the children’s homes, such as improved cleaning and the elimination of tobacco smoke, will result in a lessening of the children’s asthma-related symptoms and an increase in their symptom-free days. Further, the Inner-City Asthma Study found no difference in the improvement experienced by children who lived in homes with carpet versus children from homes with other types of flooring. In addition, no difference was found in the levels of allergens measured in carpeted homes compared to homes with hard surface floors.

An article describing the study, titled, “Results of a Home-Based Environmental Intervention among Urban Children with Asthma,” is published on the website of The New England Journal of Medicine. Based on years of research and independent testing, the carpet industry has long maintained that carpet does not contribute to allergy symptoms or poor indoor air quality. However, this is the first peer-reviewed study confirming the industry’s position from a prestigious medical journal.

The study followed 937 children from seven major U.S. cities over the course of a year. Of the participants, more than 50% of the children, aged 5-11 years, had positive skin tests to three or more allergen groups. Other common elements of the group were that they were from families whose incomes were at or close to the poverty level, as well as these factors: Cockroaches were reported in 58% of homes, wall-to-wall carpeting in the child’s bedroom in 55%, a smoker in 48%, mice or rats in 40%, and furry pets in 28%.

At the outset of the study, researchers sought to remove carpet from the children’s bedrooms, but factors such as rental agreements kept them from it. Still, family members were instructed to remove the carpet from their children’s bedrooms wherever possible.

Family members were given HEPA-filter vacuum cleaners and cleaning products and educated about various allergens and how to remove them from the home. Children’s beds were encased in dust-mite-blocking covers, and professional pest exterminators were called in where needed.

The study found that children in the intervention group missed fewer days of school, slept through the night more, and made fewer trips to the emergency room. Contrary to researchers’ expectations, children with carpet in their bedrooms improved as much and did just as well as children who had hard surface floors.

The interventions also produced marked declines in the measured levels of allergens in the home. Again, in contrast to predictions, no difference in allergen reduction was found between homes with carpets and those without carpeting.

The Inner City Asthma Study was sponsored in part by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health. According to published disclosure statements, none of the researchers or institutions were affiliated with or sponsored by any representative of the carpet industry.

The findings of the Inner City Asthma Study refute the widely-held notion that patients with asthma and/or allergies must remove their carpet, and according to Carpet and Rug Institute President Werner Braun, the study confirms the carpet industry’s assertion that clean, dry carpet is a healthy flooring choice for everyone, including children and adults with asthma and allergies. “CRI’s position is based on a body of sponsored as well as independent research, but the Inner City study is significant in that it comes from the medical community,” Braun said.
